VAHE ENSEMBLE
Pune, India
Vaishnavi is a product designer with an MFA in Industrial Design from Academy of Art University, San Francisco, where she pivoted in approach from mass-manufactured to objects and materials and contexts that hold a story, evoke emotion & create a sense of timelessness. Her role as a designer is to challenge the aesthetic and functional blocks crafts may be boxed in.
Vahe Ensemble, is the manifestation of a journey that set foot to reimagine Indian crafts into atypical objects and collectibles. An ode to the innovations of yesterday.
The approach is more radical, yet one that keeps the sustainable process of slow production alive. Between indigenous practices and materials, the focus is to deliberately bring out atypical textures. Capturing the moods of paper- smooth, crumpled, creased, crushed, stained…almost as if it were showcasing its own life stages.
Take Two, is a part of an ensemble that draws its name from the coordinates of Srinagar, Kashmir 34° N, 74°E where the craft originates. 3 4 74 is a limited series of hand-sculpted objects constructed from waste paper infused with brutalism.
